“God often speaks loudest when we’re quietest.”
– Mark Batterson, “Whisper”
A new year has dawned, and everyone is in the business of making resolutions and frantically trying to keep them. What I’ve been learning this year, however, is that my greatest goal as a follower of Christ is not to do anything at all, but to learn to be still enough to hear God’s voice.
I received a book for Christmas entitled Whisper: How to Hear the Voice of God, which is by Mark Batterson. I’ve been wanting to read the book for a while, and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite books. The point is so simple, and yet so profound: we’re wired to go out and accomplish, and this drive to achieve consumes the majority of our lives. But the more busy we become, the more difficult it is for us to hear the subtle whispers of God’s voice speaking to us.
Do you want to be a success in this life? Listen to God’s voice, and do what He says.
Do you want to lay up treasures in Heaven? Listen to God’s voice, and do what He says.
It sounds oversimplified, but when was the last time you really heard God speaking to you?
I have several goals and resolutions this year. But no matter what I get accomplished and what I never get around to, I hope to take more time this year to just be – to be still and hear God’s voice more clearly. It’s not laziness, and it’s not a waste of time. In fact, these quiet moments may be the most productive minutes in our entire schedule!
Listen – do you hear that? The God of the Universe has something to say to you…
Thanks for this post. I have added the book to my list of books to read this year.
In December I usually set goals for the next year. This year I had no peace about doing that. God gave me the word, “Trust” for this year (Proverbs 3:5,6). I’m a doer, so it is a challenge for me to focus on being instead. I’m excited about what God is going to do in my heart and life this year.

Thanks for sharing, Ruth… it sounds like the Lord is teaching us the same lesson this New Year’s season! Blessings to you in your endeavors to just “be,” (which is so much easier said than done!).
And I’m thrilled that you’re planning to read the book… you’ll love it!

Well, I can’t take credit for the idea, but it has made all the difference for me this year.
Have a blessed 2018!

Yes, yes, yes! The busier I become, the less I make time to sit at His feet and to hear His voice… hard to be “Mary” in a “Martha” world! 🙂 Love this! I can well understand that Batterson’s book is a new fave. I’m going to have to read it now! 🙂

Thanks for the post. Whisper is actually on my to read list this year as well. Another great book on hearing God’s voice is “Translating God” by Shawn Bolz. It is a short, simple read.
