Thanks to a sudden winter storm, my children’s prayers were answered and we found ourselves snowed in this morning! That’s right – no class, no work…and two very restless kids. It turned out to be a fun family day, however, as we broke out the K’Nex and had a family-wide building tournament…
One flying helicopter-car, monster truck, and lopsided house later, we realized the entire morning had flown right by. I hadn’t played with building toys like this since I was a kid, and as I put the finishing touches on my flying car I couldn’t help but reflect on the many things we attempt to build in life: relationships, careers, resumes… Sometimes things go according to plan, and most of the time they don’t. The real secret, of course, is enlisting the help of the Master Builder:
“Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it.” – Psalm 127:1
“For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.” – Hebrews 3:4
Whatever life projects you’re working on building right now, don’t forget to ask the First Architect for help and guidance. There’s no other way to find success!
Sounds like a fun day! We’re snowed in as well. Stay warm.

Thanks – you too! As long as we don’t run out of food we’ll be fine!

Good job, dad! And thank you kids for showing the grown-ups in your house that they are missing out on the best parts of life by not playing kid games (preferably with your kids) more often.

Snow days are what children long for all winter. An extra day off school always seems better than the usual weekends. Lovely description of the fun day you had, John.

Thanks… and I still get a little excited about snow days, although I won’t be crying any tears when school starts up again – ha!

I used to long for snow days myself when I was still teaching! Nothing like a good day’s sledging down the hills. Seriously though, you’ve had more that your share of it over there. I’m sure you’ll be so relieved to see the end of it. 🙂

Oh, we’ve had some snow days here, too. (They amount to not-much-snow and lots of angst about ice because we don’t have snow plows, etc., in Alabama.) We’ve also had weather-related delays for regular school days (opening 2-3 hours late). Your point is well taken: we need to ask God for guidance in “building” our lives (which really means allowing Him to build them and being open to his changes in our flawed architectural designs.) But I have to ask: who “won” the family K’nex tournament?!

Well, my flying helicopter car was pretty popular, but we let my daughter win. She came up with a really neat monster truck with swiveling guns, and did it totally on her own!

Wise daddy, letting his child win (at least on this one!)

What a fun snow day activity! I’ve always enjoyed the rare snow days we have from time to time … and try to prepare special activities for those occasions. Baking cookies, working jigsaw puzzles, and playing charade are just a few of our favorite snow day activities. Perhaps next time we are stuck inside, we will try building with our large bucket of K’nex, too.

These all sound like great activities! I tried to convince my wife to play Monopoly, but she wasn’t ready for that banking marathon…

Building day by day, we must not build on a false foundation, but on a foundation the Lord has set.
