“I’m fighting every day,” recording artist Mandisa said in an interview with MLive.com. “It’s an every-day, one-decision, one-temptation at a time battle I’m fighting.”
This reality inspired Mandisa to record a song entitled Overcomer, which has soared to the top of Christian music charts. This contemporary song serves as an upbeat reminder that when life begins to drag us down, God is able to help us live as overcomers. Here are just a few of the lyrics:
You’re an overcomer
Stay in the fight ‘til the final round
You’re not going under
‘Cause God is holding you right now
You might be down for a moment
Feeling like it’s hopeless
That’s when He reminds You
That you’re an overcomer
You’re an overcomer
Overcomer – Mandisa
My wife and I are part of a small group Bible study which is going through the Book of James, and we’ve been learning a great deal about the trials and challenges of life. Take James 1:2, for example:
“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials.”
He doesn’t tell us how to respond if we face challenges, but how to respond when we face challenges. If you are walking through life as a Christian, then you are guaranteed to come across obstacles and hardships. Why does this have to be true? It’s not that God wants His people to suffer without reason. Instead, it’s that these trials give us enduring patience, deeper faith, and make us stronger and more capable Christians.
If you were going to storm the enemy’s defenses, would you want an experienced war veteran who has fought several battles, or would you want a “green” soldier who has only read about battle tactics? I’d want the seasoned veteran! And, as Paul explains in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, this is exactly what our challenges allow us to become:
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
Trials are never fun, but they are good for us. And they will come your way – so be ready!
Greater Influence = Greater Hardships
Something I’ve really come to realize lately is the way Satan attacks us with more force the closer we are to God and the greater our influence is for the Kingdom. Take this week, for example. My wife works for a nonprofit ministry, and tonight is their annual Fundraiser Gala. About 600 people will be in attendance, and we’re looking forward to seeing great and mighty things happening for the Kingdom of God tonight!
Right now as we prepare for this huge event, however, our family has come under blatant spiritual attack. Our daughter came down with a fever yesterday without warning, our two-year-old son has begun throwing tantrums for no apparent reason, I myself have been feeling physically ill, I have been caught in traffic due to accidents or funeral processions on the freeway for two days in a row now, and the list goes on and on.
Instead of giving in to all this, we have bathed ourselves in constant prayer and wake up each morning ready to fight… because that’s what it’s going to take for us to pull this thing off! Through Christ we have overcome already… all we have to do is hang on for dear life and trust Him to bring us safely through.
We’re Overcomers – Time To Live Like It!
How would our lives be different if we lived every day with a heightened sense of awareness about the spiritual battle that is raging in our lives? How would we “prepare for battle” each morning?
As you grab your spiritual armor and “suit up” today, be encouraged! We can fight each battle with confidence and strength…because we are overcomers.
