Monday Meditation – A Song for My Funeral…

Come Thou Fount.jpg

A few Sundays ago we had a baptism, and I found myself needing to fill in some empty space with music while the pastor prepared backstage. Without thinking, I flipped to one of my favorite hymns, Come Thou Fount, and led the congregation in singing it. As we drove to lunch after the service, my wife smiled at me and said, “You must really like that song. Maybe we should sing it at your funeral!”

I couldn’t help but grin – I was guilty as charged!  I do tend to sing certain songs quite often, because they’re meaningful to me.

This particular hymn just seems to capture the essence of what I want to be known for – what I want my life to be about. When people look at my life, I want them to see a picture of God’s grace. Wouldn’t it be something if we could reach the point where our every action pointed others to Him? That’s why I love to make this prayer my own as often as I can: “Come Lord, and tune my heart to sing Your grace.”

A modern song that proclaims a similar message is Lifesong, by Casting Crowns. Here are just a few of the powerful lyrics:

Empty hands held high
Such small sacrifice
If not joined with my life
I sing in vain tonight

May the words I say
And the things I do
Make my lifesong sing
Bring a smile to You

Let my lifesong sing to You
Let my lifesong sing to You
I want to sign Your name to the end of this day
Knowing that my heart was true
Let my lifesong sing to You

Lifesong – Casting Crowns

So after thinking about it, I told my wife that she was right! “Yes, I absolutely want that song at my funeral,” I told her.

As you reflect on this today, ask yourself this question:

Does the song of your life bring a smile to your Savior’s Face?

  1. I love that song, too. I will be baptized the first weekend in August. I am so excited because I feel like my heart is in exactly the right place…..I was thinking about the day as I opened your post. It got me even more excited for the day. I feel like my “life song” is a song that would bring a smile to His face because it is all about how very much I love Him and how thankful I am….every poem/song from my heart I hope brings Him joy. Thank you!! Once again, you put a smile on my face!!!

    1. Oh wow, congratulations on your upcoming baptism! What a great way to share your testimony with your family and friends, and offer them a visual picture of the way Christ gives us new life!

  2. I think that my life brings a smile to God’s face because it is by grace that it is what it is. A hymn I want sung at my funeral is Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. I, too, like Come Thy Fount of Every Blessing.
