For a recent anniversary, my wife and I took a road trip to the Grand Canyon, which was everything we dreamed it would be. The breathtaking views and endless horizons left us spellbound, but the highlight of the trip was watching the sun set over the canyon walls.
There is just something magical about sunsets. The deep, complex array of colors casting burning shadows across the landscape below, the intricate display of light – each sunset is absolutely perfect, absolutely unique. I like to imagine God delighting in painting each sunset afresh for us to delight in. And then, each night, He clears the canvas so He can do it all again the next day.
Photographs such as the one displayed here help me to remember these moments, but I don’t really need them. The beauty of this Grand Canyon Sunset is etched forever into my heart and soul.
Why was the sunset so spectacular, the moment so profound, do you ask?
The Infinite Wisdom of Christ, the Creator
We often imagine Jesus Christ the way He appears in children’s picture books – a quiet, gentle man with a beard and a kindly smile. But glimpses of divine beauty such as this remind me that He is so much more. This same Christ was present at Creation…it was He Who molded the endless horizon of the Grand Canyon with His bare hands, and said, along with His Father, “It is good.”
What a comfort to know that the same Christ Who intercedes for me daily is the One with the infinite wisdom of the Creator.
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” – John 1:1
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1
The Reliable Strength of Christ, our Rock
After gazing towards the mountains, solid and immovable, one cannot help but be struck with awe. No wonder the Psalmist chose to describe God as our Rock and Defender.
Yes, the same God who set the mountains in their permanent resting place is the One we run to… our Shelter… our Savior.
“My God is my Rock, in Whom I find protection.” – 2 Samuel 22:3
“The LORD is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliverer.” – Psalm 18:2
The Delicate Creativity of Christ, our Lover
The power and strength of God is not all that is on display, here. No… here, for all the world to see, He shows His gentle, “creative” side. With utmost care and attention to detail, He paints a spectacular sunset anew each evening across the canvas of this earth.
Why? Because He loves us. And He wants to demonstrate that to us daily.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” – Psalm 19:1
“And I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love – how wide, how long, how high, and how deep.” – Ephesians 3:18
